Top 10 Best Movie Sequels of All Time
Sequels are hotter than ever these days, so I thought it was time to dive into my personal top 10 sequels of all time and explain why they deserve a spot on this list. While I’ve seen a lot of films, I definitely haven’t seen them all, so keep that in mind as you read through my choices.
I want to clarify that these picks are sequels, not just installments in a franchise. For instance, Spider-Man: No Way Home is not a sequel but the third installment in the Spider-Man franchise, whereas Captain America: The Winter Soldier is the second installment of the Captain America series and qualifies as a sequel. Also, you won’t find Kill Bill: Vol. 2 on this list because, according to Quentin Tarantino himself, it’s actually one movie split into two parts, so I’m deferring to the GOAT’s vision on that one.
Thanks for taking the time to check out my list. Let’s dive in!
10. Weekend at Bernie’s II (1993)
I know, I know—this pick might raise some eyebrows. But bear with me! Weekend at Bernie’s II holds a special place in my heart because it was a favorite of my Papa (my mom’s dad), who adored both this film and its predecessor. While it might not reach the heights of the original, it still offers a delightful blend of tropical scenery, slapstick humor, and a charismatic supporting cast. It’s a fun, underappreciated gem that’s worth a watch.
9. The Empire Strikes Back (1980)
For many, this classic would rank much higher, and there’s a reason for that. I was a bit late to the Star Wars saga—I didn’t see it until I was 20 in 2005. However, after catching up on the entire series, it’s clear that The Empire Strikes Back is the pinnacle of the franchise. With its iconic moments, groundbreaking effects, and rich storytelling, it’s no wonder this film is considered a masterpiece.
8. This Is 40 (2012)
If you’re still with me, let’s dive into This Is 40. While Knocked Up might be Judd Apatow’s best film, this follow-up offers a fresh take on the characters from the original. Paul Rudd and Leslie Mann deliver performances that are both hilariously brilliant and poignantly tragic. The film’s exploration of the challenges of turning 40, combined with Apatow and Mann’s real-life family dynamic, creates a unique and engaging story.
7. Terrifier 2 (2022)
This one might seem like a surprising choice, but Terrifier 2 is a modern horror triumph. I actually watched the first film after seeing this one and was a bit let down by it, but the sheer audacity and creativity of Terrifier 2 set it apart. It’s a relentlessly violent and over-the-top experience that has me eagerly anticipating Terrifier 3 this Christmas. Viewer discretion is advised for this ultra-violent gore-fest.
6. Terminator 2: Judgment Day (1991)
Do I even need to explain this one? Terminator 2: Judgment Day is a landmark sequel that’s beloved by audiences for good reason. With its groundbreaking special effects, intense action sequences, and memorable performances—most notably Arnold Schwarzenegger’s iconic “Hasta la vista, baby”—it’s a quintessential action film and a standout in the sequel genre.
5. Captain America: The Winter Soldier (2014)
While I wasn’t a fan of the first Captain America film, The Winter Soldier completely changed my perspective. This sequel transcends the typical Marvel formula, feeling more like a Jason Bourne-style espionage thriller than a conventional superhero movie. It’s my favorite film in the MCU, with a gripping plot and a level of sophistication that sets it apart from other entries in the franchise.
4. The Godfather Part II (1974)
The Godfather Part II is a film that commands respect and admiration. While it might not be my absolute favorite, there’s no denying its iconic status. It’s a masterful continuation of the Corleone saga, with a deep and complex narrative that explores both Michael Corleone’s rise to power and Vito Corleone’s early years. Its depth and craftsmanship make it a film worth revisiting.
3. Scream 2 (1997)
Scream is a Top 10 film for me, and Scream 2 is a testament to Wes Craven’s ability to deliver a sequel that not only lives up to but expands upon the original’s success. Released just a year after the first film, it features a clever twist, a higher body count, and a more elaborate exploration of horror movie tropes. Its brilliant satire and meta-commentary on sequels keep the franchise fresh and engaging.
2. Before Sunset (2004)
I stumbled upon Before Sunset by chance on HBO, and it left me speechless. Clocking in at just 80 minutes, it’s an intimate and captivating sequel that excels in dialogue and character development. The film’s exploration of the characters' lives since Before Sunrise and the way it deepens the romantic narrative make it the standout entry in Richard Linklater’s remarkable trilogy.
1. The Dark Knight (2008)
The Dark Knight is, without a doubt, the greatest sequel in cinema history. Heath Ledger’s portrayal of the Joker is nothing short of legendary, and the film’s intricate plot, stunning practical effects, and emotional depth make it a true masterpiece. It’s a film that balances thrilling action with profound themes, and it remains a perfect 10 in my book.
